What does Optometry mean?
Optometry is a free sanitary profession, which is independent from Primary medical care, and the science dedicated to the study of the complex visual system with the objective of obtaining the highest level of visual effectiveness: the best visual performance with minimum energy use.
In order to achieve so, it resorts to different science areas as anatomy, biology, neurology, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, psychology, ergonomics, and very especially to the most influential area to the development of humanity: Optics.
What does an optometrist do?
Optometrists are professionals who take care of and improve our vision. They focus on monitoring eye refractive errors through procedures as skiascopy or retinoscopy and, especially, procedures of eye refraction. Thus, they can detect and compensate for visual abnormalities as myopia, hypermetropia, keratoconus, heterotropia, astigmatism, among others.
Optometry also includes detection of systemic signs, illnesses, disorders and pathologies related to visual system, and patient reference to ophthalmologists.
