Vitamins, especially the winner trio A, C and E, are essential to protect the retina.In the lens of the eye, there is a very high concentration of vitamin C, which protects this part from cataracts. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, peppers and kiwis.
Vitamin A is also called retinol when it is of animal origin such as in salmon and provitamin A when of plant origin and can be stored in the body until needed.
Vitamin A is known as carotene, and betacarotene is the most known type.
Vitamin E, as vitamins A and C, is famous for its antioxidant function. It slows the natural process of oxidation of the body and it protects eyes from certain diseases associated to aging by delaying their progression. Broccoli is probably one of the most complete vegetables for healthy eyes. Eating 100 g of broccoli provides the body with all necessary elements to maintain a good eye health with no calories, providing 1 / 5 of the required amount of vitamins C, A, E, B2, zeaxanthin and lutein.
Broccoli is especially beneficial to protect from harmful UV radiation thanks to its high content in sulphoraphane. Broccoli prevents most common eye diseases such as AMD, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts.

Zinc is an essential component of many enzymes; without it, beta-carotene would not prevent night blindness and other adverse effects of vitamin A deficiency.
